Authentic Wayuu Christmas Hammock Giant Handwoven Series 1-1

Description

What a wonderful hammock for the Christmas story – and suitable for the whole family!
This fantastic, heavy hammock comes from the Colombian Wayuu people, from whom we’ve been purchasing hammocks and bags since 1992. We consider these hammocks true works of art. Nowhere else in the world are such exceptional pieces made. The double weaving process makes the hammock extra thick, which is essential in the cold desert nights of La Guajira. This also makes the hammock ideal for use in cooler climates.

Within the Wayuu culture, hammock weaving is an important tradition. Girls are required to make their own hammocks before their marriage, a process that takes months. This is how they learn to pass down this unique technique from generation to generation. As a result, virtually every Wayuu woman can make beautiful hammocks. The hammocks are very wide—a full 250 cm—and designed to carry an entire Wayuu family. They are also a healthy people who have inhabited the plains of La Guajira for thousands of years and continue to refine their artisanal techniques.

Women play a dominant role in the Wayuu people. Children carry their mother’s surname, and this feminine character is clearly reflected in the hammock’s vibrant, tasteful colors and beautiful fringes. Because making these hammocks is an intensive and time-consuming process, they are not cheap. We always pay the price set by the Wayuu women themselves; their craftsmanship is more than worth it.

With proper care, a Wayuu hammock will last for many years. With a weight capacity of 250 kg, it’s not only beautiful but also exceptionally sturdy. A true gem for your home!
